Faithful Resistance and Noncooperation: How the Religious and Everyone Can Prevent Democratic Backsliding

When state violence increases, authoritarianism rises, and the rule of law breaks down, attending protests and writing petitions can feel ineffective. So, what can we do to truly cause change and stop the anti-democratic politics of domination and exclusion from becoming entrenched in our country?

In this 3-hour interactive, participatory workshop, we will:

  1. Reflect on the current rise in authoritarianism and opportunities to intervene

  2. Discuss the nature of “people power”, the power of everyday citizens to work together in society to change systems

  3. Examine the wide spectrum of tactics available to resist authoritarianism and push for change

  4. Begin strategizing about the ways we can use noncooperation strategies in our own communities.

This workshop uses the Freedom Trainers' Noncooperation curriculum to train participants in strategic noncooperation; while tailored to those who are part of religious congregations and faith traditions, the content is accessible to everyone, and all are welcome at this workshop. After this training, you will better understand the urgency and opportunities of this political moment, know how civil resistance and noncooperation can undermine and stop rising authoritarianism, and have begun identifying ways you and your communities can nonviolently defend democracy.

In order to protect the safety of participants and organizers, this workshop will not be recorded. The slides and resources will be shared with all who register.

This training is part of a series of workshops preparing people to organize for justice, resist authoritarianism, and build a better tomorrow. Check out other workshops here.
