It is the story of a Christian pastor and a Muslim imam, in the midst of violence-ridden Nigeria, who find reconciliation and friendship with one another and now work together for peace between Christians and Muslims in their own county. Thanks to an email from Chris Seiple, President of the Institute for Global Engagement, I read what he was calling a landmark speech on religious freedom by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Her speech was marking the State Department's release of the 2011 International Freedom of Religion Report, which opens with the words of Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

What can bring together a group of Muslims, Christians, and Jews who desire to find reconciliation and to serve those in need? Gardening, that's what! Recently, "Multi-Faith Friends for the Common Good", a group facilitated by Peace Catalyst in Raleigh, North Carolina, came together at a local farm managed by Goodwill Industries to harvest produce for donation to the North Carolina Food Bank, which distributes food aid to the needy.

It’s not that Nigeria is at war. But it does feel like that for many Nigerians, and especially the Christians.

In 2008 I led a conference in Kenya of fifty evangelical leaders from around the world. One of the issues on the table was how to counter the increasing alienation between Muslims and Christians. Conference participants agreed that evangelicals have to address this vital issue but disagreed on the best way to relate to Muslims.In response to this we decided to write a consensus document for evangelicals.

During a formal lecture on peacemaking, someone raised their hand and said, “Rick, thank you for your excellent presentation. But where does the Devil fit in all this?” I gave a brief response, but here’s what I wish I had said.

Given the historical record, it may seem the deck is stacked against American evangelicals organizing into a comprehensive peace movement—yet that’s exactly what’s happening. Enter Evangelicals for Peace.
